Season 2017 promises to be a big one for womens football on the back of AFL W and South Metro Football League’s (SMJFL) huge growth in junior girls team, and our oldest of the age-brackets put on a show during Round 1.
Here is our weekend wrap:
After just one win in 2016, Bentleigh produced a competitive effort against the East Brighton Vampires before fading in the last quarter, but positive signs for the Demons nonetheless.
2016 Runners-Up St Peters began the new season on a very positive note, keeping Beaumaris scoreless in the first-half before running away with victory to the tune of 32-points.
In the final fixture, we saw an early season upset with 2016 Premiers Prahran defeated by St Bedes/Mentone by four points in an arm-wrestle. The Tigers came from behind at three-quarter time in a topsy turvy affair in which they held the visitors goalless in the first quarter, kicking four goals to just one behind in the final term to score the win.
