The inaugural game for the South Metro Junior Football League Youth Girls team took place at Mentone Reserve Wednesday night against the Yarra Junior Football League Girls 2, with SMJFL being unable to overcome Yarra who made it over the line by a solitary point.

A wet and crisp evening didn’t dampen the spirits of the girls who really worked the ball effectively across the ground, keeping the Yarra girls low scoring throughout the first half.

A late goal by Alana D’Aquino from St Bede’s/Mentone Tigers AFC saw SMJFL hold a 12 point lead at the half-time break.

However the Yarra girls really dug into the defense throughout the final half to come out with the win, kicking a goal late in the final quarter to overcome SMJFL by a point.

Captain of the South Metro girls, Georgia Ricardo from East Sandringham JFC was awarded best on ground by Coaches Jackson Kornberg and Jo Adams. Ricardo was strong in the final quarter, with Coach Kornberg quipping that Georgia almost pulled off the win by herself in the last quarter due to her determination.

However all the girls really put the pressure on, with hard tackling and effective marking throughout the game keeping the game relatively low scoring on both sides.

Kornberg was disappointed with the loss, but is proud of how the girls handled it.

“I was pretty happy with the way the girls went about it,” he said. “But we’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Kornberg remained hopeful for the future of the girls in footy.

“The future’s looking bright, for not just our region, but for girls football in general.”
