It was a tough tournament for the SMJFL girls in their inaugural year of competition as they came up against three seasoned sides in the two YJFL sides and the experienced SEJ.

They almost opened their account with a win when they took on the YJFL 2’s side at Mentone Reserve and if it weren’t for errant kicking then they likely would have picked up their first ever win. The girls led when every siren sounded except for the final siren because the YJFL kicked a goal in the dying seconds to take a one-point lead – and a delivered a heart breaking one-point loss.

Missing in front of goals will always cost you but more so in a low scoring slugfest like the experienced in round one. In the end it was difference as the SMJFL kicked 3.10 compared to their opponents more accurate 4.5.

Team captain, Georgia Ricardo had a massive final quarter and almost willed her team to victory singlehandedly and co-coaches Jackson Kornberg and Jo Adams awarded her the medal as the team’s best player.

Round two was always going to be difficult, this time playing against the YJFL 1’s side. The girls weren’t able to slow down the quick ball movement into the YJFL forward line which resulted in them conceding 33 shots at goal.

Despite the final margin being 80 points there were some shining moments for the SMJFL squad, in particular the performance of Hannah Dawes who was working just as hard when the final siren sounded as she was when the first kicked proceedings off. Kornberg and Adams rewarded her efforts with a medal for the standout player on the day at the conclusion of the game.

While the team went scoreless in their final game against the SEJ, they didn’t drop their heads and played hard all game. Stephanie Wallace stood out and received the team’s final medal for best afield for the competition.

“I was pretty happy with the way the girls went about it but we’ve got a lot of work to do,” said Kornberg. “The future’s looking bright, for not just our region, but for girls football in general.
