In a innovative take on recognising young members of the SMJFL community, the Monash University ‘Leader of the Month’ was introduced in 2018.

Over the five (5) months of the SMJFL Season, a young person was celebrated each month. The SMJFL was delighted with the number of nominations, and it made choosing the following leaders quite the task.

Thank you to the clubs, who nominated members for their efforts in giving back to their communities, whether it was fundraising, helping out at the club off-field, giving back through coaching, or simply leading their peers on-field. It was magnificent reading the stories of young people who are embodying their club’s values and exemplifying leadership skills so early in their sporting careers.

Congratulations to all the monthly winners, and ultimate Leadership Award Finalists for 2018;

  • Clancy Phillips – Oakleigh JFC
  • Nick Ritchie – SMJFL Umpire Academy – winner
  • Finnean Barnacle – St Paul’s McKinnon JFC
  • Daniel Simpson – South Melbourne Districts JFC
  • Arthur Wernham – East Sandringham JFC

SMJFL was excited to welcome Jenny McHendrie – Group Manager, Audience Marketing from Monash University to present the second annual award to the stand-out nominee.

Nick Ritchie, May’s Leader of the Month, is an umpire with the SMJFL Umpire Academy, who has displayed leadership both while officiating and coaching younger umpires. Nick was given the award for his dedication to umpiring; displaying skills beyond his years on-field, as well as regularly helping at training, and mentoring novice umpires when he was unable to be out on the field.

This kind of dedication is priceless and combined with his hard work on the track, he earned himself an appearance in the Under 17 Division 1 Grand Final as a field umpire. Nick is a very humble character and his leadership qualities help Nick to be well-respected in the community, in and out umpiring. Thus, proving him to be a worthy winner of the accolade.
