The Academy and its 724 umpires and counting are ready to face the fast-approaching 2021 season, which will commence on Sunday 18 April.

Despite lockdown placing a pause on all in-person umpire activities in 2020, the umpires persevered during lockdown and continued to train virtually in efforts to prepare for a potential season.

There are several upcoming events, activities and projects that the Monarch SMJFL Umpire Academy umpires can look forward to this year.

Come and Try Day

The Monarch SMJFL Umpire Academy’s first-ever ‘Come and Try Day’ will be held this Sunday 28 February 2021 at RSEA Park.

The event will provide an opportunity for those interested in umpiring to get a taste of the different styles of umpiring (field, boundary and goal), find a new passion, learn new skills and make friends along the way.

The event will feature prizes and giveaways, and a painting workshop from painting expert, Monarch Painting Ambassador Mark ‘Fussy’ O’Connor.

Welcome back event

The Monarch SMJFL Umpire Academy season will officially open with a Welcome Back event, for new and returning umpires to celebrate getting back to umpiring with a celebratory barbeque.

The event is sure to see the league’s umpires reconnect with their old friends and get back to the sport they love.

Community Umpire Round, supported by the Monarch SMJFL Umpire Academy

The annual Community Umpire Round will return in 2021, presented by the Monarch SMJFL Umpire Academy.

Football simply wouldn’t be possible without the contribution umpires make to the game, from an elite level to a local grassroots level.

The Community Umpire Round will and celebrate the hard work the league’s 724 umpires – and counting – put towards each game.

Player recognition award presented by Monarch SMJFL Umpires

The SMJFL will be running its very own Brownlow-style award throughout the 2021 season with the Monarch Player Recognition Program.

Across the league, the best team players from each team will be awarded a vote from a Monarch SMJFL Umpire.

The votes will be logged throughout the year, all the nominated players to go in the running to be the Monarch Player of the Year, awarded at the Monarch SMJFL Umpire Presentation Night.

Monarch SMJFL Umpire Series

The league will also highlight the emerging talent from within the Academy throughout the 2021 season with the Monarch Umpire of the Week series.

The evening will feature giveaways, SMJFL Grand Final appointment announcements, and several awards – most notably the coveted annual AFL Victoria ‘Golden Whistle’ Award.

The Golden Whistle Award is given to an outstanding umpire that has shown a clear desire to pursue a career in umpiring.
