Melbourne Women’s star Melissa Hickey sat down with Russell Robertson ahead of what promises to be a fantastic season for womens football in the South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL).

With teams almost doubling from last season to over 70 female teams in 2017, Melissa discusses the impact of AFL Women’s on grassroots footy, the growth among the gender and what the ceiling is womens footy.

Hickey played seven games as a defender in the inaugural AFL Women’s competition in 2017 and was Melbourne’s marquee player signing. She collected All-Australian honours averaging 11.6 disposals a game, shutting down some of the competition’s best forwards.
