This year, for the first time, the SMJFL have an Under 9 Girls’ football competition and it started down at Glen Huntly Park in Caulfield East on Sunday.

While many SMJFL clubs expressed their enthusiasm in fielding an Under 9 Girls teams in 2016, many found they had a handful of interested players but not quite enough to enter a full team. The casual approach was adopted and has allowed girls to tie up their boots and take the field each week.

In Round 1, there were 19 girls that participated from three clubs – St Peters, Ormond and Waverley Park. Each club had done amazing ground work to get all the girls involved. Other SMJFL Clubs with eligible Under 9 girl players are urged to send them along to Round 2. All girls are welcome from any skill level.

Last Sunday, for the very first U9 girls match, players from all clubs were split into two teams and played a high quality game of junior girls footy. All the girls loved the opportunity to play competitive football against other girls their age, with the same level of passion, in such an enjoyable and well-run environment. The excitement of Round 1 was great to see, and we are sure that as the season progresses the number of players participating each week will only increase. This will allow for a fully fledged Under 9 girls fixture for the reminder of the season.

With the Under 9 Girls competition moving from strength to strength, this format will allow for the highest quality of matches possible – even though individual clubs may not have the numbers for a full team.

Congratulations and thanks go out to Ormond JFC for hosting the first round extremely well. They were responsible for making all the players and spectators welcome and created a carnival like atmosphere. All other interested girls are welcome to come down to play and get a taste of girls’ junior football. To register or for further details please contact your local club.

The Round 2 Under 9 Girls matches are being run at St Peters FC’s Centenary Park at 2pm on Sunday 24th April.
