The Under 14s are expected to perform well in both divisions despite facing strong Essendon District Football League and Eastern Football League sides in their competitive fixtures.

The South Metro Stars will be led by Sam Calogero with support from Michael Smith, Chris White and David Williams. This is an experienced coaching panel that has potential to drive the side toward success. Each member of the coaching staff holding AFL accreditations of various levels.

The tournament kicks off on May 27 at the Moorleigh Reserve in Bentleigh East with the 6:15pm Div 2 game acting as a precursor to the 8:15pm Div 1 game. Both divisions are anticipating difficult openings to the Carnival.

Nonetheless, Calogero has emphasised the focus for the playing group and believes this tournament is about much more than winning a premiership.

“It is about the relationships that have been built as well as respecting the opposition,” Calogero said.

“We’ll be competitive and looking at winning every contest but we’re not only looking at winning.

“We are looking at playing contest-by-contest and hopefully we can end up on the right side of the ledger.”

Since February, the Stars have trimmed their original list of 105 players into a solid squad of footballers and despite Calogero acknowledging the list could’ve been trimmed earlier – he doesn’t think it’ll be a hindrance.

“The time factor is actually beneficial to allow the players get to know each other,” Calogero said.

“What we’ve done is train the players to a specific style and gameplan to become better footballers.

“In regards to time, I think there’s enough.”

While expectations are low-key – the short time spent in training to prepare for the competition will potentially be a factor – particularly when youth is involved.

Nevertheless, Calogero and his coaching staff remain confident in the South Metro Stars to be competitive in the Carnival.

The U14 Div 1 and Div 2 players will face EDFL at our home ground, Moorleigh Reserve, Bentleigh East, with the Div 2 game starting at 6:15pm.
