On Sunday 24 August 2014 at Mentone Grammar Oval, the top two sides of the inaugural 2014 U14 Div 5 faced off in a great contest for both sides.

As both teams played each other in round one with a narrow nine point win by Ormond, they were facing again for the third time. Ormond had only faced one loss for the season against East Malvern earlier in August, while the Knights had lost to Ormond in round 1 and then to Ajax in round 10.

Both teams started off the first  quarter well  with  the Knights unable to maximise their opportunities to blaze out in front, scoring 2.4 to Ormond’s 2.0. With a narrow lead of four points, the Knights had to be sure they were scoring from their goal opportunities.

The second was another tight contest, with the Knights managing to land another goal on the scoreboard and kick two behinds. Ormond were working hard, but the eight point deficit was looming. The Knights were looking fierce and Ormond were unable to convert their shots’ into goals.

Quarter three saw Ormond playing superb football, scoring 4.1 for the quarter and reducing the Knights’ score to 2.1 through some tough defensive play. The margin was tight at Ormond leading by four points and both teams were testing each other superbly in the final game of the season.

The final quarter saw both teams work hard for the footy and to convert their opportunities into goals. With Ormond overtaking the lead in the third, they managed to extend their lead, scoring two goals and winning the match by 10 points. The Knights played valiantly during the match, and managed to score one extra goal in the final quarter.

Ben Putamorsi scored three goals in his sides’ win against the Knights, and also received the second best on ground nomination. Sam O’Connor received the top best on ground nomination.

Final score:
East Malvern Knights JFC White: 6.7.43
Ormond U14 Blue: 8.5.53
