The top-side of the U15 Div 1 competition, the Mighty Knights had a spectacular season. With an undefeated streak heading into the finals. But the Rovers were following a close second and the stage was set for an interesting match-up.

East Malvern won their semi-final match against the Rovers by an impressive 24 points, forcing the Rovers to take their finals journey the hard way. Although with a dominating 43 point victory over the Sharks, Hampton were ready to face Knights’ challenge again.

In the first term, the Knights’ were anticipating the tough match ahead and came out of the blocks firing. Kicking 3.4 to Hampton’s one minor score, it was setting the early sights for a forceful victory.

But the Rovers, spurred on by the semi-finals loss, weren’t going to let another victory slip away from them. In a flurry of kicks, the Rovers clawed to claim the lead by five points heading into the half-time break. The sides had shifted as the Knights had only scored a behind in the second quarter. Both teams were left to ponder whether the tide would turn again: Was another Knights’ charge on the cards? Or could the Rovers could keep their form through the rest of the match?

The Rovers had the answer. Despite some harder pressure by the Knights in the third, the Rovers kicked four majors to push their margin even further leading into the final term. With the difference now 28 points, the Knights still had a chance to tackle their biggest challenge of their season.

In a tough final quarter, the Knights played valiantly, but it was all for the Rovers. Despite some mis-firing down at the goals with five behinds, Hampton’s two goals for the fourth quarter and earlier lead were able to keep them over the line. The Knights faced their first loss of the season in a major upset, but were a great challenger and team for the whole season.

Final score:
East Malvern Blue: 6.8.44 defeated by Hampton Rovers: 10.11.71
