The top two sides of U13 Div 2 fought it out at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday 17th August.
Despite the dominance of the ladder-leading Waverley Park Hawks through the season, it was the fourth-placed Demons who prevailed over them in a late final quarter charge to book their Grand Final spot.
For their opponent, the second-placed Rovers had to face Mordialloc-Braeside. Much like the other semi-final, the Mustangs were leading all day, but the Rovers came back to win the final quarter and the match by a point.
The Demons and the Rovers knew they would be able to come back when the pressure was on, but how would they go against each other?
The first term saw the Rovers holding a slight lead of three points, with both teams booting two majors. It was an even-paced quarter which allowed for both teams to get a feel of their opposition. With the season having seen both teams score a victory over the other, this match would be the decider of not only the season, but their record against one another.
The second saw St Paul’s missing some opportunities at goals, just as the Rovers did in the first. Kicking 1.2 to the Rovers 1, St Paul’s were only trailing by a point leading into the break. Both teams needed to push in the second half to control the game.
After the break, the team that had all the right steps were the Rovers. With a dominating quarter, they scored 2.4 to push the margin out to 17 points. With the Demons unable to register a score and facing the biggest margin in the match, they needed to bring the pressure. The Rovers also needed to be wary, as they knew how St Paul’s could match up in a final quarter.
But in the end, the Rovers didn’t need to fear. Kicking three goals and a minor in the last quarter allowed them to breathe easy. Despite the Demons managing to kick another goal, the victory was complete. The Rovers won the match by 30 points.
Hampton Rovers: 8.8.56 defeated St Paul’s McKinnon: 4.2.26
