For the battle of top spot in Girls Division 2, it was a tough road for Bayswater. On Sunday 17 August at Mentone Grammar Oval, Bayswater were getting their chance to take on second placed Ferntree Gully to claim victory in the Grand Final.

Bayswater had a hard match in their semi-final against the Hampton Rovers. After being down by 11 points at half-time with only two points as their score, the Bayswater girls courageously fought back to reduce the Rovers to no score in the final quarter to win by two points.

Ferntree Gully, on the other hand, were ruling the play in their semi-final match against the Waverley Park Hawks, winning by 28 points.

The Grand Final game began with an even playing field in the first. Both Ferntree Gully and Bayswater were tuned on to defense and were restricting play and benefiting from turnovers. With Ferntree leading by one point at quarter time, pressure was on to increase the margin through the game.

Sure enough, Ferntree Gully brought the pressure. Scoring three goals to round out the quarter and extend their lead by 17 points. Ferntree weren’t able to make the most of their goal opportunities, scoring two behind for the second quarter.

Throughout the third, despite the Bayswater girls’ hard work to get the ball down to the goals, they weren’t able to score. With only four behinds, Ferntree were able to push the margin out to a further 20 points.

Finally the Ferntree girls were able to hone in on their victory. Scoring 3.5 to Bayswater’s one goal. Ferntree Gully won the game by 31 points. Both teams worked hard in the match and deserved their spot in the highest game of the competition.

Final score:
Ferntree Gully: 7.7.49
Bayswater: 2.6.18
