The 2015 Under 16 Division 2 Grand Final loomed as a tremendous contest between the top two sides, South Melbourne Districts and East Brighton Vampires, and fans did not leave Mentone Grammar disappointed.

South Melbourne had been the dominant side for most of the season, dropping just two games on its way to the minor premiership. The Vampires weren’t far behind in second spot.

Honours were split after their two meetings during the home and away season. South Melbourne came up trumps at Albert Park in Round 6, but the Vampires reversed the result in Round 11 with a commanding 39-point win at Hurlingham Park,

When the two met again in the high-stakes Second Semi Final at Toorak Park, the Districts dealt a psychologic blow on their opponents with a 25-point triumph to advance to the Grand Final.

EBJFC then accounted for East Malvern in the Preliminary Final to book their spot in the premiership decider.

Both sides got off to a flier in the Grand Final, win no sign of early nerves. Both sides found avenues to goal and the first term became a free-flowing shootout. Seven major scores were registered in an entertaining exhibition of junior footy, with the Vampires taking a four-point lead into the huddles.

Both sides were better defensively from that point onwards, but the intensity at the contest remained. East Brighton added two goals to South’s one in the second quarter to extend their lead to 15 points at the half, but it was the third term where they really made their charge.

The Vampires’ defence proved impenetrable in the oft-known premiership quarter, an apt description in this instance, keeping the Swans goalless while adding two themselves to have one hand on the cup by three quarter time.

They led by 27 points at the final change and continued their forward presses, peppering the goals in the final term. Although they missed a few shots, it mattered little to the result as the damage had already been done.

East Brighton ran out deserved winners by 32 points to claim the Under 16 Division 2 premiership.

Vampire Sam Sofronidis won the medal as best afield while South Melbourne Districts’ Harry Gustin booted two goals.

South Melbourne Districts 5.6 (36)

East Brighton Vampires: 9.14 (68)
