The 2015 Under 15 Division 2 Grand Final proved to be a hard-fought affair, despite what the scoreboard showed at the end of the four quarters.

Minor premier Bentleigh Demons/St Pauls and the second-placed East Malvern were the two strongest sides all year, and fought out some interesting battles throughout the year.

Their first meeting in Round 3 saw the Knights dish out a monumental 86-point thrashing at Darling Park, but the Demons reversed the result with a similarly hefty 84-point drubbing at McKinnon Reserve in Round 10.

The two top sides then faced off in Second Semi Final, and it was a much closer result with East Malvern earning a week off and an armchair ride into the Granny on the back of a 16-point win.

Bentleigh/St Pauls then played East Brighton in the Preliminary Final, winning by 22 points to qualify for the big dance.

And the Grand Final itself proved to be a tremendous battle between two quality opponents.

Bentleigh/St Paul’s were left to rue missed opportunities in the first quarter, registering an inaccurate 0.5 for the quarter. East Malvern had no such issues, booting the only three goals of the quarter to lead by 16 points at the first change.

It was more of the same in the second with the Demons continuing to press forward, but making up the difference with a flurry of minor scores. They added two goals in addition to the five behinds they scored for the quarter, while East Malvern continued to make the most of their chances.

Despite registering four fewer scoring shots, the Knights won the second quarter by a point to lead by 17 at the main break.

The second half was hotly contested, but unfortunately for the Demons they could make no significant inroad into the deficit. They fought hard to work their way back into the contest, but East Malvern had all the answers, holding them at arm’s length to record a 24-point victory.

The final margin wasn’t a true reflection of how evenly matched the teams were all afternoon, with Bentleigh/St Pauls’ early inaccuracy ultimately proving fatal.

Fraser Morrisby booted three goals in the Knights’ win, while Josh Salmon was the only other multiple goal kicker for the victors.

Bentleigh/St Pauls’ Hugo Ferdinand won the best on ground medal, despite not walking away with a premiership medallion.

East Malvern: 10.9 (69)

Bentleigh/St Pauls: 5.15 (45)
