St Kilda City and Bentleigh finished the home and away season as the top two teams in the SMJFL Under 14 Division 4 competition, so it came as no great surprise that the two would meet in the final game of the 2015.

The Saints were minor premiers with an 8-2 record after its 10 games, while the 6-4 Demons finished in second spot on percentage ahead of Waverley Park.

They had met just once during the home and away season with St Kilda City running out 22-point victors over the Demons at Bentleigh Reserve in Round 12.

But their rematch in the Second Semi Final at Koornang Park was decidedly one-sided, with St Kilda City winning by a whopping 71 points to earn a week off and a Grand Final berth.

Bentleigh then crushed Waverley Park by 65 points at Princes Highway Reserve to secure the remaining spot in the decider.

But despite entering the big dance not having beaten their opponent throughout the season, the Demons certainly weren’t daunted by the challenge before them.

They took the fight up to the Saints early in their clash at Meade Reserve, and by quarter time the two sides still couldn’t be split, registering 2.1 apiece.

But a dominant second term from the boys in red and blue saw them bust the game wide open, booting 4.3 to 0.0 to lead by 27 points at the half.

St Kilda City, to their credit, fought hard to keep the Demons goalless in the third, but could only manage one themselves, which wasn’t enough to get them back in the contest.

Ultimately the half time differential proved a bridge too far for the Saints, and another three final-term goals saw Bentleigh home by 28 points.

Demon Samuel Kalomiris played an absolute blinder and collected the best on ground medal for his stunning performance that included two goals.

Joel Nankervis, however, nearly pinched best afield honours after his six-goal masterclass up forward for the winners.

Cameron Sharp booted three of St Kilda City’s five goals.

St Kilda City: 5.5 (35)

Bentleigh: 9.9 (63)
