Week one of the finals saw a thrilling qualifying final and also one side’s season come to an end in an elimination final.
St Bedes/Mentone vs East Brighton Vampires
In the do-or-die First Semi Final, St Bedes/Mentone defeated East Brighton Vampires by 48 points at King George Reserve. St Bedes/Mentone got off to a flyer as they held East Brighton to one behind and added three goals of their own to lead by 19 points at the quarter time break. The second was a more even affair as both sides kicked two goals, but the Tigers extended their lead to 22 points. After half time the game was put beyond the Vampires’ reach as they again were held goalless while giving up 3.3 to see the margin balloon to 42 points. Two goals to one in the last to the Tigers again extended the lead and by the final siren, the Vampires’ season had come to an end. Maddison Wilson was the major goal kicker on the field with four goals for St Bedes/Mentone.
Prahran vs St Peters
At King George Oval, the qualifying Second Semi Final was decided by a single point with Prahran claiming the victory over St Peters. Prahran started faster of the two sides and their one goal was the difference in the match at quarter time. Prahran would extend their lead in the second quarter as they added another 1.1 to 0.4 for St Peters to lead by nine points at half time. St Peters were able to shut down Prahran, holding them scoreless, and kicking two goals and two behinds to take a five-point lead into the last quarter. There was only one scoring shot in the last quarter but to St Peters’ dismay, it was a goal for Prahran to take the final lead and hence securing a week off and Grand Final berth in a fortnight’s time. Tess Plowman was the leading goal kicker on the ground with two for Prahran.
