The SMJFL has four representatives in the School Sport Victoria (SSV) Metropolitan football team that will compete at the School Sport Australia 15 Years and Under Championships in Darwin from August 10-18.

Congratulations to Sam Michael (Murrumbeena), Blake Hayes, Andrew McGrath and Michael Rogers (all East Brighton) on their selection in the team.

Metropolitan coach Sean Kavanagh said the four SMJFL boys were part of a team with a good mix of height and speed.

Having coached Metropolitan teams to the U15 title in 2011 and 2012, Kavanagh knows what it takes to be successful at the Championships.

“Size-wise, we’re dramatically bigger this year,” he said. “We’ve picked probably a good dozen with genuine speed as well, to balance up that size.”

As a result, Kavanagh thinks the group will be very competitive at the pointy end of the Championships.

Here are his comments on the SMJFL’s representatives:

Sam Michael: “Sam will go through the footy. He’s got a strong body, wins his own ball and we can see him being part of our midfield rotation.”

Blake Hayes: “Blake will most likely play as a deep forward and ruckman. It’s his strong body we really liked. We expect big things from him and to have a real presence through the midfield.”

Andrew McGrath: “Andrew’s speed is what attracted us. We can see him probably playing through a forward flank and even potentially as a small, quick back pocket against those nippy little forwards.”

Michael Rogers: “Michael will most likely play through our wings and use his leg speed. He’s got a nice left foot on him as well and we think he’ll be an important part of our midfield.”

Good luck to all the boys up in Darwin!
