Six talented SMJFL boys have made the School Sport Victoria (SSV) state football team and will compete at the School Sport Australia 12 Years and Under Championships in Darwin from August 10-18.
The SMJFL congratulates Nick Burke (Beaumaris), Jehtt Brazionis and Jackson Voss (both Cheltenham), Fischer McAsey and Finn Maginness (both East Brighton) and Jack Mahony (East Malvern) on their selection in the team.
Team Vic coach Joshua Bourke (also Cheltenham JFC’s Football Operations Manager) said it was a “fantastic effort” for the six SMJFL representatives to make the final team of 23, given over 1000 primary school footballers nominated to be part of it.
Bourke said Melbourne’s southern metropolitan region was traditionally well represented in the team and 2013 was no exception. Here are his comments on the SMJFL’s representatives:
Nick Burke: “A very good decision-maker. He’s a nice kick who’ll play all across the ground.”
Jehtt Brazionis: “Really impressive and very highly rated. Good on both feet, doesn’t miss too many targets.”
Jackson Voss: “Also a very good kick, he’s a classy left-footer.”
Fischer McAsey: “Will probably play in defence. He’s a big centre half back who’s done really well.”
Finn Maginness: “He’s a fantastic ball-winner and also very highly rated. Really hard at it, wins lots of contested ball.”
Jack Mahony: “Very athletic, really good with his hands and a pretty good decision-maker as well.”
Due to its depth of talent, Bourke predicted this year’s team could replicate the feats of the 2012 squad, which took home the national title.
Good luck to the boys in their attempt to do so!
