This weekend the SMJFL’s Under 13, 14 and 15 interleague squads don the light and dark blue and go into battle for our league.

All teams will be hoping to replicate last year’s Under 15 Division 1 team, which won the SMJFL’s first-ever interleague title at the AFL Victoria Metropolitan Junior Championships.

The action begins on Saturday, when the Under 14 and 15 Division 2 teams return to Moorleigh Reserve in Bentleigh for the second round of the Metro Champs.

These teams also appeared at Moorleigh on Wednesday, May 30. The Under 14s had a strong 53-point victory over the Eastern Football League in freezing night-time conditions, but the Under 15s succumbed to the EFL by 62 points.

This time around, the Division 2 boys take on the Western Region Football League. The Under 14s kick off at 10am and the Under 15s, who will be hoping to give their home fans an improved showing, begin at 12pm.

Conditions on Saturday are forecast to be showery, so after playing in a dense Bentleigh fog in Round 1, the SMJFL’s toughness will be further tested.

Meanwhile, the Under 14 and 15 Division 1 teams appear at Gardiner Reserve in Gisborne on Saturday. Both squads went down to the YJFL in Round 1 and will be hungry to turn things around against the Riddell District Football League.

The Under 14s also start at 10am, with the Under 15s at 12pm. The 14s are seen as a very strong group this year and should rebound hard against the RDFL after running into a traditionally strong YJFL outfit.

On Sunday, our two Under 13 interleague teams head to Bulleen Park for matches against the Northern Football League at 11.45am and the Yarra Junior Football League at 1.30pm.

The 13s are a very committed group of boys this year, with impressive performances expected from both teams, but in particular the Division 1 team.

The Under 14 and 15 Division 1 teams play at home for the first time in Round 3 of the Metro Champs on Monday. Sunny conditions are forecast for their public holiday showdowns with the Essendon District Football League, so we should see a big crowd in attendance at Moorleigh Reserve.

The Under 14 and 15 Division 2 teams also face the Essendon District Football League at Leo Dineen Reserve in Tullamarine.

Times for the Monday games are the same as the Saturday games – a 10am start for the Under 14s and 12pm for the Under 15s.

If you can make to any of the SMJFL’s interleague games this weekend, make sure you get around our boys and support them!
