The squads for this year’s Interleague competition have been finalised for the U13, U14 and U15 squads. In 2014, for the first time in the SMJFL’s history an U16 youth girls’ squad has also been put together.

The U14, U15 and U16 squads will all participate in the AFL Victorian Metro Junior Championships with the first round kicking off this Wednesday the 28th of May against the South East Juniors and the Yarra Junior Football League.

The remaining two rounds will take place on Saturday the 7th and Monday the 9th of June. If successful in their earlier rounds the teams will progress to the grand finals on Saturday the 28th of June for the Division One sides and the 21st of June for the Division Two teams.

It is an exciting year with the inaugural girls’ team taking the field and their undaunted coach, Jackson Kornberg, expects to set the bar for future squads.

“Obviously, as it is the first year this has been done we really want to build the foundation of the program and set the standard for the years to come,” said Kornberg.

Each squad contains 26 players after teams sent their best youngsters to the Interleague trials to compete for spots.

Unlike the older age groups, the U13’s will play in a carnival on Sunday the 8th of June after coach Ron Verma whittled from over 100 candidates into 48 in order to create two teams.

“It’s just a high level of training with a bunch of very talented kids so a lot of kids will benefit from being in that environment,” said Verma. “It’s a very hard program to get into… It’s very competitive.”
