A huge Queens Birthday weekend of interleague football kicked off on Saturday with with the Under 15 Girls, Under 15 Boys and the Under 14 Boys all in action. With better weather conditions than what greeted us in Round 1, the Monash Uni South Metro Stars enjoyed a solid day winning 5 out 6 matches.

The Stars hosted four fixtures across two venues with the Under 15 Girls squaring up against Northern FNL at Highett whilst the Under 15 Boys teams took on the Essendon District FL at Moorleigh. Over at Jacana the Under 14 Boys also played the EDFL in their one and only road trip for the championships.

At Highett the Under 15 Girls 2 got us off to flyer with a solid 40 point win with Rosie Finster booting 4 goals. Anna Siemering was best afield for the Stars in a dominant display. The Under 15 Girls 1 were met by a fired up Northern team who got the early jump on the Stars. Some inaccurate kicking may have cost the stars a chance to narrow the eventual margin of 25 points. Amelia Bishop and Ella Devine booted a goal each whilst Hope Maillard fought hard all day to be awarded SMJFL’s best on ground.

The conditions at Moorleigh for the Under 15 Boys matches were played in brilliant sunshine, showcasing the junior venue. The Under 15 Boys 2 got the early jump before the EDFL closed the deficit to 10 points at half time. A fired up and determined Stars outfit returned after the main break to pile on five straight goals before rounding out the match comfortable 37 point winners. Brett Boscacci kicked 4 goals and William Richards awarded best on ground. With scores in the Under 15 Boys 1 match eerily identical at half time to that of the U15 Boys 2 match, the local crowd hoped that the Stars could replicate their fellow teams’ third quarter. They not only replicated it, they put the foot down with some scintillating football kicking 17 of the last 18 goals of the match to run out 106 point winners. Justin Davies kicked 4 goals in a best on ground display whilst Nathaniel Dear also chipped in with 4 majors.

The Under 14 Boys were just as impressive in their away wins at Jacana. The Under 14 Boys 2 started fast then held their nerve against the EDFL registering a hard fought 21 point win. Ben Hempel took the honours as best afield for the Stars whilst Byron Clarke, Brad Lowe and Kyden Vella slotted 2 goals each. The Under 14 Boys 1 fought back from a 16 point quarter time deficit to head into half time with a 7 point lead. The second quarter inspired the Stars to even better team football as they kicked away to eventually salute with a 29 point win. Aydin Reilly was electric all day kicking 3 goals and was ably supported by George Wardlaw who took home the best on ground medal.
