On Friday 18 March 2022, the South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL) South Metro Saints  will play Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL) at Marvel Stadium in a curtain raiser before the round one match between St. Kilda and Collingwood.

The curtain raiser coincides with the AFL’s ten-day Festival of Football in 2022, celebrating the return of the football season and bringing the community back together throughout Victoria, with density limits no longer applicable at stadiums.

“This is a great opportunity for the league to profile the development pathway of the SMJFL,” said SMJFL CEO Matthew Brown.

“And it will be great to see the league colours represented on the  big stage, by some terrific young footballers.”

“The players who represent the SMJFL through the Interleague program work really hard and absolutely love their footy,” said SMJFL Football Pathway Director Gab Suriano.

“This game is an exciting opportunity for the 24 selected footballers to celebrate their SMJFL Interleague/St. Kilda NGA journey.” Suriano continued. “We have also appointed four very promising SMJFL umpires to officiate the match.”

“After a couple of interrupted football seasons, I know that this group are ready to put on a good show before the first Friday night game of the AFL season.”

First bounce is at 5:45pm.

The SMJFL’s Interleague squad for next week’s curtain raiser will be announced later tonight live through the official SMJFL Facebook page.
