The SMJFL flooded Etihad Stadium Saturday 25 March to welcome in the Season 2017, and shared an amazing day honouring grassroots footy.

Players and parents were invited to watch St Kilda FC take on Melbourne FC in their season opener, helping celebrate community football and our partnership with the Saints.

After a long standing relationship and years working side by side, the game formalised St Kilda FC’s partnership with the SMJFL and secured a future of being ‘Better Together’. The SMJFL welcomed the Saints’ dedication to the league and to community football.

Despite the result, those in attendance enjoyed being amongst the action and up close with their favourite players. A number of lucky game goers were also chosen to participate in an number of amazing match day experiences.

Amongst those was die hard Saints supporter and Hampton Rovers AFC player Darcy Lyon, who won St Kilda FC’s change room passes for the day.

Darcy couldn’t wipe the smile off his face as he met some of his footy idols after the game, in an experience the junior will never forget.

While Darcy got to hang out with the players in the rooms, Dingley JFC’s Michael Bose joined his heroes on the ground. As the Saints Team Mascot, Michael was decked out head to toe in footy gear and ran through the banner alongside the team.

Michael and Darcy weren’t alone in their making match day memories, with over 30 SMJFL players stepped onto the ground, forming a guard of honour on two occasions pre-match. Once for retiring Saint Sam Fisher, and once to flank the team when running through the banner.

The game marked a tremendous occasion, and the SMJFL were honoured that so many parents and players could be part of it, either using Saints memeberships, exclusive Saints Squad memberships, or taking up the Free SMJFL Community ticket offer.

We look forward to sharing many more special events with the Saints and a bright future, ‘Better Together.’
