In a first for the SMJFL and Sandringham Zebras, Brighton Beach JFC organised a special Under 10 Lightning Premiership which was played on Saturday prior to the Sandringham vs Collingwood VFL game.

The intent was for the kids to have fun and all four clubs mixed players together from each of their Under 10 teams so that as many kids as possible got to experience the day. Beaumaris took this the furthest with 40 kids participating. Overall, there were 134 players involved, as well as two umpires from the SMJFL who controlled all four games brilliantly.

In the week prior, each team got to train at Trevor Barker Oval with senior players from the Zebras. On Wednesday night it was Beaumaris and East Sandringham and on Friday it was Highett and Brighton Beach.

On the day, each team played each other once and then two finals were played. Brighton Beach ended up winning, but the result was irrelevant, as this was a day to simply let all the kids play more footy.

The excitement they got out of another two weeks training and playing on Saturday made the event more than worthwhile and it is planned to now make this a yearly event. It was also great to see so many of the kids and parents stay around and support Sandringham when they faced Collingwood.

Many thanks also go to TGI Friday’s, which supplied each participant on the day with a voucher for their restaurant.
