After a long break, sometimes it’s harder to play out your second game of footy than your first… Hopefully SMJFL players didn’t suffer a case of the second-up blues on Sunday! Let’s wrap up what happened:

The Comebacks:

– Super win from behind by South Melbourne White in Under 14 Div 2 against Cheltenham Milicia. Down by a goal at half time and seven points at the final change, the Districts kicked four goals to two in the last term to snatch victory. Oliver Marks and Vic Metro Youth Girls representative Izzy Huntington were brilliant in the clinches.

The Heartbreakers:

– ‘Heartbreak’ and ‘Hawks’ seem to go together in footy these days… When Waverley Park Brown kicked 1.6 (12) to East Sandringham’s 1.1 (7) in the first quarter of their Under 11 North clash, the Hawks were feeling good about their ability to hit the scoreboard. Alas, they didn’t hit it again! Even at three-quarter time, East Sandy lead by two points in a low-scoring contest, but booted five goals almost out of nowhere in the final term. Game over!

– A couple of brave final-quarter rallies didn’t quite come off in Under 17 Div 2… Cheltenham White had opened up a 19-point break on Mordialloc-Braeside Red at three-quarter time but the Mustangs wouldn’t say die, closing to within five points at the siren. Likewise for the superteam of St Pauls/Bentleigh/Murrumbeena, a 39-point deficit to Ajax at the last break was whittled down to 13. Close, but no cigar for either team.

The Heroes:

– A lacklustre start for South Melbourne White in their Under 12 South match against East Sandringham meant they trailed by 16 points at half time, with only two behinds on the board. Enter Jack Carter. Jack kicked three majors in the third term as South Melbourne stormed to the lead with six unanswered goals. Joe Barnes and Will Bainbridge were also superb for the winners.

– There was a ripper one-point match in Under 13 Div 1 between Mordialloc-Braeside and Beaumaris Sharks, with the Mustangs holding on for a hard-fought win. When it’s a tight slog all game long, you need players like Tomas Long, Gerard Kelly and Luke Macquire guiding you through as they did for Mordi-Brae on Sunday. Great effort boys.

– They might call it The Shootout at Pinewood Reserve… Not since the days of Essendon’s Paul Salmon and Gary Ablett snr at Geelong have we seen goalkicking like this! In Under 14 Div 1, Mt Waverley’s Daniel West kicked eight goals and teammate Jackson Taylor snagged five as the Falcons secured an eight-goal win, while for their opponents St Kilda City, Lachie Harris bagged eight majors in a losing team!

– 14 individual goalkickers for East Sandringham in their Under 15 Div 2 win on Sunday… Great stuff guys – sharing is caring!

And of course, the Girls:

– We had strong wins to the East Brighton Vampirettes and Highett girls in the Under 15s this week, but game of the round had to be a clash between old South Metro Girls foes St Peters and East Sandringham… This one was close all the way, with St Peters getting a jump early, then losing the lead by half time but reasserting themselves in the second half to win by 11 points. Grace Perriam, Olivia Gleeson and Bethany Supple were fantastic for the victors, who don’t seem to have suffered a premiership hangover from last year at all!
