Each Friday in the lead up to the finals, the SMJFL will take a look at the key games in each age group. Starting with Round 10, eight big encounters will take place this Sunday!

Under 14 Girls Div 1

The East Sandringham v East Malvern Under 14 Div 1 Girls match heads up a huge round of Junior Footy action in the SMJFL this Sunday 24th June. With top spot on the ladder up for grabs, the Zebras and Knights match is shaping up as a hard fought and nail biting encounter. East Malvern leading goal kicker Rosie Finster has been in great form booting 19 goals to date. The Zebra defenders will need to be on top of their game to hold her at bay. The early season match between the two teams ended in a draw with East Malvern coming from 14 points down at the final break to deny East Sandringham a big win away from home. This will be a ripping match!

Under 11 Mixed Orange

Top of the table clash between Brighton Beach and St Bedes / Mentone Red is the feature Under 11 match of the round. A nail biting 1 point victory to Brighton Beach in Round 3 sets up this mouth watering clash at Brighton Beach Oval. The Kangaroos have inflicted the Tigers’ only defeat to date with next to nothing separating the two teams. The goal kicking form of St Bedes / Mentone forward Flynn Walker will have the Brighton Beach defenders on their toes, however the Kangaroos will be fresh from their forfeited fixture last Sunday and keen to make it a double over the Tigers.

Under 12 Mixed Blue

Can anyone stop South Melbourne Districts Blue team? That is the question East Brighton Bloods team hope to answer with a big yes on Sunday. The second place Vampires host the Swans and a win over the ladder leaders would give them a major boost for finals. South Melbourne will have other ideas as they look to keep their unbeaten streak going. Louie Montgomery has been exceptional for the Swans this year having an influence in most matches. Whilst the last meeting between the two teams was all one way traffic to the Swans, the Vampires have been in great form of late. A much closer contest is expected.

Under 13 Mixed Div 4

The kids from East Malvern head south to take on Cheltenham Black in the battle for top spot at Le Page Park. The Knights have been flawless to date, playing some exceptional team football at home and on the road. A solid win last week at Beaumaris shows the Knights hold no fears playing away but will face a stern test at the home of the Panthers. Cheltenham Black have also been building some great form with a winning run of four matches. The step up from Div 5 hasn’t troubled the Panthers and they have a chance to show they are top dogs (or cats) of Div 4, a mantle East Malvern will be keen to hold onto.

Under 15 Boys Div 2

A log jam in the Under 15 Boys Div 2 ladder may finally begin to break up with the much anticipated clash between Ormond U15 Div 2 and Ajax Comets. Currently separated by percentage, the Monders would love a win against a fellow finals aspirant. Ajax have been building their season nicely since stepping up from Div 3, currently holding down second spot. The first meeting of the two teams promises to be a ripping contest with both teams free wheeling and high scoring. Ajax’s Brett Jacobs will be a handful up forward whilst at the other end, Ormond’s Thomas Natsikas will be the focal point for the Monders. The scene is set for a gripping contest at E.E. Gunn Reserve.

Under 16 Girls Div 1

A top four clash in the U16 Girls Div 1 sees Beaumaris host Port Melbourne at Jack Barker Oval. A narrow defeat to Oakleigh last week has left the Sharks hanging on in the top 4 and needing to rebound against the Colts to stay in the finals race. The Colts have been ticking along nicely, currently holding down second spot. An early season encounter between the two saw Beaumaris take the points in Port Melbourne. This match is going to be a brilliant contest between two very good midfields. Whoever can deny the opposition easy inside fifties will go a long way to winning the game.

Under 17 Boys Div 2

Can South Melbourne Districts claim a big scalp in the Under 17 Boys Div 2? Murrumbeena are firmly in their sights as the Swans cling to 4th spot on the ladder. The Lions have their own motivation to stay top of the pile and boast some exceptional scoring power and spread the load evenly. With a home ground advantage to help them, South Melbourne will go into the mactch confident they can match Murrumbeena on the scoreboard. This could be an end to end high octane match, especially early on. The Swans’ Eren Soylemez has been in some great form of late and will be eager to carry that into this match in order to give his team a chance of an upset.

Youth Girls Div 1

It’s all on the line for Beaumaris and Bentleigh in what looms as a finals shaping match at Banksia Reserve. Beaumaris hold a slender 6% break on Bentleigh who have the bye next week. The Demons need a result to keep pace with Beaumaris and St Peters. A Sharks victory will go along way to locking away their finals spot. A cracker of a match in Round 3 saw Bentleigh take out a 7 point victory over Beaumaris. A similar close match is expected with neither team giving an inch. The Sharks will be confident after running Brighton Beach to within a point before having a break last week. If they can bring that form to this match, the may slightly close the door on the Demons. A huge match with huge ramifications either way.
