How did our #southmetrostars go in round one of the 2015 Victoria Metro Junior Championships?

U14 Division 1

Our U14s played their first match of the championship against Essendon District Football League (EDFL) for 2015.

The Div 1 side played a great match at Moorleigh Reserve. Daniel Marchese led the goalkicking with three goals and received the best on ground nomination.

Chayce Black and Phillip Hayley-Fenton also gained two goals apiece.

Overall it was a great team performance by our South Metro Stars in their first match. The boys really used the ball effectively and managed to come away with the win by 30 points.

Final score:

South Metro Stars: 12.8.80

Essendon District Football League: 7.8.50

U14 Division 2

Our first match of the night at Moorleigh Reserve was between our Div 2 U14 side and EDFL.

EDFL Div 2 put up a tough match against the South Metro stars. The South Metro Stars managed to start well in the first quarter, leading by 9 points at quarter time.

Leading goalkicker and best on ground winner Ethan Michaelides was part of the huge team effort that saw the stars secure the win at home. EDFL missed a few set shots at goals, which hindered their performance on the night.

Final score:

South Metro Stars: 8.9.57

Essendon District Football League: 6.10.46

U15 Division 1

Our U15 sides played in Burnside Heights for their first match of the 2015 Interleague, also against EDFL.

The Div 1 side came out kicking in the first quarter of their match, leading EDFL by 23 points. However EDFL didn’t stay quiet for long. They managed to respond to the Stars by reducing the margin to just a point for the first half.

Hanging onto the lead, the Stars managed to score 2.2 in the third quarter, only to then draw to the EDFL side after they again responded, kicking 13 points in the last quarter.

The best on ground was awarded to Joel Crocker, who also scored a goal in the Stars’ draw.

Final score:

Essendon District Football League: 4.14.38

South Metro Stars: 5.8.38

U15 Division 2

Our Div 2 South Metro Stars also played a really close game against EDFL at Burnside.

It was neck and neck for most of the match, with EDFL leading by 7 points at the three quarter time break. However the Stars dug deep and managed to score 2.3.15 for the final quarter, securing the team’s victory by 7 points.

The Div 2 side had five individual goalkickers: Terry Patten, Henry Gunning, Will D’Amico, Lachlan McDonnell and Jack Munnings.

Lachlan Newman received the best on ground award.

Final score:

Essendon District Football League: 4.7.31

South Metro Stars: 5.8.38

Youth Girls

The South Metro Stars U16 youth girls really have to reflect and band together after this first match against Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL).

YJFL came out hard right from the bounce, leading the first quarter by 41 points with the Stars gaining no score. Jemma Owen managed to score Stars’ first goal in the second quarter, but by then YJFL had gained a significant lead, up by 107 points at the half time break.

The Stars played through the match, displaying great teamwork and leadership skills as they supported each other through the game.

In the end, YJFL won the match by 134 points.

Isabel Quintal was awarded the best on ground. The South Metro Stars youth girls will be able to get bigger and better after the loss in preparing for the match next week.

Final score:

Yarra Junior Football League: 20.20.140

South Metro Stars: 1.0.6
