Monash University U17.5 Boys Division 1

 

St Bedes / Mentone Tigers 14.7.91 def Mordialloc-Braeside 6.7.43

Opening Round 15, St Bedes Mentone Tigers welcomed Mordialloc-Braeside at Mentone Reserve. From the opening bounce, St Bedes / Mentone set the tone with a dominant first quarter, putting 4.4 on the board while restricting Mordialloc-Brae to just one goal and a behind. St Bedes / Mentone’s forward line was efficient, converting opportunities into goals, while their defense held firm against any Mordialloc-Braeside advances. The second quarter saw St Bedes / Mentone extend their lead, adding another four goals to their tally to take a 38-point lead into the main break. Mordialloc-Braeside struggled to find momentum, managing only one goal and a behind in the quarter. The home side’s impressive midfield structured set up a handful of scoring opportunities for their forward, which were capitalised on by the likes of Oliver Griffin and William Mazzeo. Mitchell Kitto and Lachlan Hecker were also key contributors, with Hecker booting three goals. Mitchell Reed and Jonathon Svilar were among others who had a significant impact on the game. Mordialloc-Braeside showed signs of life at the beginning of the third, doubling their score through the efforts of Adam Eales who kicked three goals, however, St Bedes / Mentone remained in control, adding another 1.3 to maintain a comfortable lead. The last quarter saw the home side finish strongly, adding another five goals to their tally and sealing the 48-point victory.

 

Bentleigh JFC 18.6.114 def Waverley Park Hawks 6.7.43

Hot off a huge win last week against East Sandy Rovers, Bentleigh returned to Bentleigh Recreation Reserve aiming to deliver another statement performance, this time against visitors Waverley Park Hawks. The hosts opened at pace, establishing a 13-point lead in the first quarter with 4.2  against Waverley’s 2.1. Charles Nailon, Jackson Morrissey, and Charles Nailon, took charge in the second term, extending Bentleigh’s advantage to 37 points, with the scoreboard reading 9.2 to 3.1. Bentleigh’s midfield continued to pile on the pressure in the third, consistently winning the ball out of the center and delivering it efficiently to their forwards, who capitalised on the opportunities with multiple goals. Oliver Drury was a standout, kicking three goals, while Samuel Haywood, Thomas Washington, and Willis Reidy also made significant contributions on the scoreboard. Bentleigh's relentless attack and solid defense left Waverley Park struggling to keep up, as the gap widened to 54 points by the end of the third term. Franki Kromidellis and Isaac Deayton showed their best efforts to inspire a late comeback for the Hawks, however Bentleigh kept their foot firm on the pedal in the closing quarter, adding another four goals to seal a comprehensive 71-point victory.

 

AJAX 16.5.101 def East Brighton Vampires 8.4.52

A four-goal opening quarter saw AJAX gain a strong lead at Princes Park, whilst visitors East Brighton were held to a single major and two behinds. By halftime, AJAX had doubled their score, kicking 8.0 against the Vampires' 3.3. Ethan Lackman and Nico Levy’s efficiency in front of goal was highly commendable, whilst AJAX’s control of the game was evident as they dominated the contest, feeding their forwards with precision a demonstrated strength in converting their inside 50s into goals. The Vampires made a spirited attempt to close the gap in the third quarter, adding goals through Connor Tyler and Sam Brown, who each scored two goals, and Jack Malone and Luke McGinness, who also contributed on the scoreboard. However, it was not enough to match AJAX's relentless attack and disciplined defense who remained composed and continued to apply scoreboard pressure, adding two goals themselves to lead 10. to 8.4 by the end of the term. Standout performers for AJAX included Joshua Slade, Phoenix Janover, Bailey Nussbaum, and Hayden Katz came up trumps in the final term, contributing to the home side pulling away definitively, piling on six goals to seal a 49-point victory. A huge congratulations to AJAX who conclude the 2024 Monash University U17.5 Boys Division 1 home and away season with an undefeated status, claiming 11 wins and 0 losses.

 

Prahran JFC 12.14.86 def East Sandy Rovers 5.5.35

After suffering a tough loss in Round 14, East Sandy Rovers looked to bounce back as they travelled to Como Park to face a Prahran side who too had come off the back of some disappointing results. East Sandy commenced exactly as intended, kicking 4.1 thanks to Angus Zufic and Jack Painter, Prahran were unable to trigger their intensity, only scoring 1.3. However, the home side quickly found their rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring their opponents with 3.7 to edge ahead 31 to 28 by halftime. Prahran prevailed in the third and kept the game firmly in their control, adding 3 major scores to their total whilst holding the Rovers scoreless. Fergus Vile and Alfie Kidman were instrumental across both the second and third quarters, kicking 3 goals each. The final quarter saw Prahran seal the victory in style, kicking 5.3 attributable to Harrison Williams, Roman Nuttall, Kip Scarborough, Baxter Kam, Max James, who all found the scoreboard, whilst East Sandy Rovers managed just one more goal, falling 51 points short.

 

 

SMJFL X YJFL U18 Youth Girls Competition

 

Prahran JFC 7.9.51 def Beaumaris Sharks 3.2.20

The opening match of the 2024 SMJFL X YJFL U18 Youth Girls Competition finals series, King

George Reserve welcomed Prahran JFC and Beaumaris Sharks, two sides who have hit their strides heading into the business end of the season. Displaying intent early, Prahran JFC quickly established a 13-point lead by the end of the first quarter. Their early accuracy in front of goal, converting three goals from just four scoring shots, set the tone for the rest of the game. Beaumaris struggled to match Prahran’s intensity, managing just one goal in response. The second quarter saw Prahran continue to build on their lead, adding another two goals and a point to extend their advantage to 20 points by halftime. Beaumaris managed to score a goal to keep themselves in the game, but the gap was already starting to widen as Prahran’s disciplined defensive efforts made it difficult for Beaumaris to find opportunities. Beaumaris showed some fight after the half time break, scoring another goal and narrowing the margin slightly. However, Prahran’s consistency and pressure around the ball meant they were able to add a further 1.2 to their tally, maintaining a 21-point buffer going into the final term. The final term summarised the outing for Prahran, six scoring efforts rounding out a comprehensive win for Prahran. Chloe Williams, Harriet Kogler, and Lucia Turnbull were among the standout players for Prahran, each contributing to their team’s overall performance with skill and determination. Izabela Ignjic was particularly effective in front of goal, kicking three majors that played a significant role in her team’s victory.

 

St Kilda City 8.6.54 def St Peters / Bentleigh 7.1.43

The second SMJFL X YJFL U18 Youth Girls Competition finals fixture at King

George Reserve, St Kilda City faced St Peters/Bentleigh, with both sides looking to turn their fate in finals after an underwhelming home and away season. St Peters/Bentleigh commenced strongly in the first quarter building a 13-point advantage by the end of the first quarter, leading 4.1 to St Kilda’s 2.0. Maintaining their advantage in the second quarter, St Peters/Bentleigh wove an abundance of scoring chances together, heading into halftime with a 16-point lead. Despite a strong first half from the home side, St Kilda City mounted a significant comeback in the third quarter which proved crucial, outscoring their opponents 3.2 to nothing and taking a four-point lead into the final quarter. St Kilda City's composure under pressure and an accurate 3-goal quarter key to turning the tide, with Keira Whorlton’s goal was instrumental in shifting momentum in their favour. With St Kilda’s goal scoring prowess on full display, City’s defence stole the show in the final term, only conceding one goal and providing a strong backbone to allow their side to flourish inside 50. The hosts extended their lead in the fourth, managing to hold off a determined St Peters / Bentleigh side to secure the win and progress to face Prahran in the SMJFL X YJFL U18 Youth Girls Competition preliminary final.
