The news that Geelong Football League player Casey Tutungi was left a quadriplegic following a freak on-field accident recently has shocked and saddened all within the football community.
This terrible incident has unfortunately occurred in the prime of Casey’s life. The 27 year old has played with Geelong in the VFL and recently represented the Geelong Football League in AFL Victoria Country interleague matches. Casey’s fiancée is also expecting their first child later this year.
As a fellow football community member to all of us, the SMJFL would like to show its support of Casey and his family.
How can you help?
SMJFL Under 10 Age Group
The SMJFL is asking attendees at the Under 10 NAB Lightning Carnival on Sunday July 28 to donate a gold coin. For the players, the SMJFL will provide all Team Managers with a money bag to collect the money and ask the Team Managers (and/or a suitable parent) to drop the money bag off to the SMJFL Match Centre after their first game. The SMJFL and the Host Clubs (Bentleigh JFC & East Brighton Vampires JFC) will have donation tins spread around the two venues for donations by spectators.
SMJFL Under 11-17 Age Groups
The SMJFL is asking Member Clubs to raise funds over the next week by asking Under 11-17 players to attend their next training session and/or match this weekend (July 27-28) with a gold coin donation. Additionally, Clubs are encouraged to have donation tins at their Canteen for this weekend’s matches.
How to deposit
The SMJFL is asking all Member Clubs to drop in their fundraising to the SMJFL Office by no later than next Tuesday 30th July. The SMJFL will then deposit the amount directly to the Casey Tutungi Future Fund on behalf of the league and Member Clubs.
Please note that while the SMJFL will deposit the amount in one transaction, the SMJFL will notify the Casey Tutungi Future Fund of the breakdown of individual Club donations and this means that all Clubs will go in the chance to win one of 10 ‘Become an AFL Club for the Day’ experiences, as per the attached flyer.
This fundraising is in support of Casey and his family at this difficult time and we appreciate your support of this initiative.
