Footy is back! After a slightly delayed start to the season due to Easter being later in 2019, the ball will be bounced on the 2019 SMJFL season this weekend.
It promises to be one of the biggest seasons in the league’s history, with approximately 490 teams kitting up across the region. We’ve picked out a few games which have grabbed our interest to get the season started.
Under 18 Girls – Hampton Rovers vs Beaumaris
Sunday 2.00pm, Moorleigh Reserve
After claiming the Under 18 Div 2 premiership last year, Hampton will be looking to perform strongly in the Under 18 competition this season. The Rovers face Beaumaris, who will be keen to avenge their preliminary final loss from last year on the back of a six-win season.
Under 17 Boys Div 1 – Beaumaris vs St Peters
Sunday 2.00pm, Banksia Reserve
What better way to start a premiership defence than on your home patch? That’s the case for Beaumaris on Sunday as the Sharks set out to defend their 2018 crown against St Peters at Banksia Reserve. Beaumaris were a formidable outfit last season, dropping just two games on their way to a win over Cheltenham/Highett in last year’s decider, while St Peters will be out to impress as a new entrant into the Under 17 Div 1 competition this season.
Under 16 Boys Div 1 – East Brighton Vampires vs Mordialloc Braeside
Sunday 1.35pm, Hurlingham Park – Oval 1
East Brighton Vampires are looking to go one better in 2019 and will host Mordialloc Braeside in what should be a cracking contest. The Vampires finished second on the Div 1 ladder last season with nine wins and a Grand Final appearance, while Mordy Brae were just behind them in third with eight wins. If 2018 was any indicator, we should see some excellent football played between these two sides on Sunday afternoon.
Under 16 Girls Green – East Malvern vs East Brighton Vampires
Sunday 12.15pm, DW Lucas Oval – Dunlop Reserve
Following a dominant season in Under 16 Girls Div 1 last season, East Malvern will look for a strong Round 1 showing against East Brighton Vampires at DW Lucas Oval. The Knights went undefeated on their way to the premiership last year, while East Brighton were strong performers in Under 16 Div 2 last year as two of their sides reached the finals.
Under 15 Boys Div 1 – Ajax vs St Kilda City
Sunday 10:00am – Princes Park – Oval 1
Ajax and St Kilda City are two new entrants to the Under 15 Div 1 competition this year and both teams will be keen to open their season with a win. Both clubs were in in Div 2 in the Under 15 competition last year where Ajax registered four wins and St Kilda City finished the season with six, so a Round 1 victory would be ideal.
Under 14 Mixed Div 1 – Ashwood vs St Bedes/Mentone Tigers
Sunday 11.45am, Essex Heights Reserve
Two new entrants to the Under 14 Mixed Div 1 competition this year and both sides will be out to make early inroads in 2019. One of four matches at Essex Heights Reserve on Sunday and Ashwood would love to no doubt chalk up some wins.
Under 14 Girls Green – Waverley Park Hawks vs Murrumbeena
Sunday 1.30pm, Columbia Park
One of last season’s premier U14 Div 3 sides in Waverley Park Hawks come up against Murrumbeena who are having their first run in the Under 14 Girls competition. The Hawks lost just two games last season to finish second in Div 3 and will be keen for a good showing against stiff opposition in the Lions.
Under 13 Mixed – East Sandringham vs Brighton Beach
Sunday 9.55am, Chisholm Reserve
East Sandringham were solid in last year’s U13 Mixed Div 1 competition, winning five games on their way to a finals berth. Brighton Beach finished second on the ladder in Div 2 last season and will be out to cement their place in Div 1 this year. Expect a bold showing from both teams to kick off 2019!
