Earlier this month the Oakleigh Dragons Junior Football Club held a Road Safety night for the players in the club who have or are about to get the Learners Permits.

The night came about due to members of the committee feeling that there needs to be something more they could do in the area for the players at the club.

Oakleigh has a valuable motto “Through Football Better Citizens”. The motto comes from their strong Oakleigh Youth Club Football Club Heritage.

So the club decided to tackle the problem facing so many young men and woman in the community, this being Driver Safety. The night was run by RoadSafe South East who are a community road safety group committed to reducing the road toll in the municipalities of Cardinia, Casey, Frankston, Greater Dandenong, Kingston and Mornington Peninsula.

RoadSafe South East Inc. aims to:

•Achieve a reduction in road trauma in the Southern Metropolitan Area.

•Develop and implement community programs that will target the behaviour and attitudes of road user groups or vehicle or road environment improvement.

•Develop community support for road safety, particularly the seeking of sponsorship from local commerce and industry for road safety initiatives.

•Develop liaison between municipalities, police, fire brigade, local businesses, media, service organisations, community groups and the Roads Corporation.

•Develop diverse community involvement in and responsibility for road safety behavioural programs within the region.
