The Kingston Redbacks Junior Football Club will join the SMJFL in 2013.

An application from the Mordialloc Sporting Club Inc. (MSC) to field an Under 9 team next season was supported by the SMJFL Board and member clubs at last Tuesday night’s Annual General Meeting.

The MSC introduced an Auskick program at Ben Kavanagh Reserve during the season, which attracted 35 children.

The club hopes to develop its junior football arm by retaining most of these participants in SMJFL teams for 2013 and beyond, while continually attracting younger children to its Auskick program.

The Kingston Redbacks JFC has identified the Waterways and Aspendale Gardens areas as potential recruiting zones. The SMJFL supports this view and does not feel these areas will greatly impede on the recruiting zones of existing member clubs.

The Kingston Redbacks JFC has no interest in attracting SMJFL players from clubs in surrounding areas in order to field teams at all age levels. The SMJFL is committed to supporting the playing numbers of existing member clubs and has introduced restrictions limiting the growth of the Kingston Redbacks JFC to the ‘organic’ growth model described above.

SMJFL General Manger Jake McCauley said: “We are excited at the prospect of welcoming a new club and a new team of Under 9 players in 2013, in a region of the League where demand for football is strong.”
