Major Sponsor of the league Monash University  is excited to be unearthing so many young leaders in it’s support of junior football in the region.

In its second year sponsoring South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL), its member clubs, and its 11,000+ participants, Monash is set to recognise young leaders for their contribution to teams, clubs and their community.

In 2018, five ‘Leaders of the Month’ will be awarded across the season, with an ultimate Leadership Award winner announced in September at the annual Presentation Night.

In June, Finn Barnacle has been awarded the ‘Leader of the Month’ award for his efforts in giving back to the younger members at St Paul’s McKinnon JFC and Auskick.

Finn was nominated by Club President and Coach Paul Smith for his respectful attitude towards all involved in the game.

Paul admires the way in which Finn behaves both on and off the field,

“Finn has embraced the game and respected all that have played with him, beside him or against him.  He has been a pleasure to coach and mentor over the years. To be recognised with an award is a well deserved opportunity for his amazing efforts. Great job, Finn.”

Regularly Finn helps out with younger players, by assisting training junior teams from Auskick to U8s.  He makes sure to ensure that the players understand the fundamentals of football, understanding that football is about having fun, being respectful, being humble and ensuring that the volunteers are acknowledged for their efforts – being the coaches, the umpires & the helpers.

It has been noticed that his positive behaviour and role modelling has had an influence on his peers.

“As a result of Finn’s respect to the game, all other teammates have enjoyed a competitive but respectful games.  Finn embodies the core values and true spirit of football, and this attitude has now fed to all other players within the group. As such the group have a zero tolerance to disrespectful behaviour” Paul explains.

Terrific effort, to Finn, his family, friends, and coaches at the club.
