The SMJFL has appointed Bernadette Vaux as its new Director of Umpiring.

Ms Vaux has been actively involved in junior football in Melbourne’s southern metro region for several years.

In 2012, she worked within the SMJFL Umpiring Department as the assistant director to outgoing director of umpiring Lawrence Hinrichs and as its female development coordinator, overseeing the training of female umpires.

During this time, Ms Vaux reviewed the overall structure and operation of the SMJFL Umpiring Department to ensure all SMJFL umpires receive an appropriate level of education from 2013 onwards.

Prior to this, Ms Vaux was involved in the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers girls football program as a coordinator and coach.

In 2011, she was named female coach of the year of Victoria’s inner southern region by the Australian Football Coaches Association for her work with the St Bedes/Mentone under-12 girls.

Ms Vaux has also held the position of Auskick district manager for the inner southern region for the last four years.

SMJFL General Manager Jake McCauley said Ms Vaux would bring a wealth of football and management experience to the SMJFL Umpiring Department.

“We’re very excited to welcome Bernadette to the SMJFL team in the position of Director of Umpiring,” he said.

“We look forward to working closely with Bernadette and continuing the fantastic work of the Umpiring Department, as the SMJFL strives to become the pre-eminent training ground for developing Australian Rules umpires.”
