The growth of girl’s football is bound to blossom in the South Metro Junior Football League.
The SMJFL has promoted current Director of Umpiring, Bernadette Vaux to the full-time position of Director of Umpiring & Female Football Development, following an external review of SMJFL Girls Football.
Following the 2013 Season, the SMJFL Board appointed an external consultant to undertake a comprehensive independent review of SMJFL Girls Football.
The review was funded with the assistance of AFL Victoria with a goal to provide recommendations to the SMJFL Board for the structure and operation of the SMJFL Girls’ Football Competition in the upcoming 2014 season and beyond.
Following that review, the Board has since approved the administration to implement all of the recommendations listed in the review.
One of the key recommendations was for the SMJFL to employ a dedicated staff resource to assist with the development of SMJFL girls football.
SMJFL General Manager Jake McCauley says, “we believe that the SMJFL is the first metropolitan league in Melbourne to employ a dedicated staff resource to junior girls football”.
“This commitment to girls football reaffirms South Metro Junior Football League’s strategic objective to grow the recruitment and retention of female football players.
“The SMJFL looks forward to working with the Member Clubs, as well as local community and corporate partners, to assist the SMJFL to deliver all of the girls football recommendations.”
McCauley praised Vaux’s ongoing commitment to the SMJFL and thanked AFL Victoria for its financial support during this period.
“Bernadette is an ideal fit for the role with her vast experience and networks within the local football community, which has included a decorated career as an AusKick District Manager, coach of a SMJFL girls team that included winning the Inner Southern Region Female Coach of the Year award, SMJFL Club Girls Football Coordinator and a parent of SMJFL players and umpires,” He said.
“She has been outstanding in her part-time role this year as Director of Umpiring and we’re delighted to appoint her to this important full-time position.”
“The SMJFL would like to thank AFL Victoria for its financial support of the Girls Football Review, as well as its ongoing support in assisting SMJFL to continue to grow and develop SMJFL Girls Football.”
Bernadette Vaux begins her new full-time role on November 27, 2013
