Victorian sports clubs can now apply for up to $50,000 in funding to improve shade facilities at venues across the state through the Victorian Government’s new Community Shade Grants Program.

With two in three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70, AFL Victoria CEO Steven Reaper is urging all community football netball clubs to ensure they are well equipped to be more sun smart in 2016.

“Australia has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, so it’s vital that clubs have the right facilities in place to help reduce the risk of ultraviolet (UV) over-exposure within its community,” he said.

“This is a great initiative and I urge those clubs in need of greater levels of shade to ensure they submit an application before this program closes on December 13.”

Clubs can apply for one of three grant bands available which will be used to fund newly built shade facilities, the purchase of portable shade, planting of natural shade and repair of existing shade.

  • Band 1: up to $5,000
  • Band 2: $5,000-$20,000
  • Band 3: $20,000-$50,000
