Ashwood Junior Football Club, based at Essex Reserve, is excited to have planned a number of initiatives to acknowledge the AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round for the first time.

In preparations for this weekend’s round 8 matches, the center circle of Essex Reserve has been painted in bright shades of the Aboriginal flag. A simple touch to the turf that highlights the significance of the round, and contribution of Indigenous people to local football.

The first match is Under 9 Mixed Pink in which the Magpies will play the East Sandringham Zebbies.

Commencing at 8.50am, all supporters will be invited to join the two teams surrounding the center circle, and an Acknowledgement of Country will be performed prior to the toss.

Indigenous player Jaylen Gorey has been named Ashwood’s captain for the match, and may do the coin toss prior to the game. A small, yet significant gesture for Jaylen.
