It’s that time of year to show your South Metro pride, because the AFL Victoria Metropolitan Junior Championships kick off this Wednesday!

It will be a huge night under lights at Moorleigh Reserve, with the SMJFL’s Under 14 and 15 Division 1 teams both doing battle with South East Juniors (SEJ).

The night will begin with the Under 14 match at 6.15pm, while the Under 15s will take the field at 8.15pm.

The Under 14 and 15 Division 2 teams head out to Narre Warren North Recreation Reserve on Wednesday to launch their own Metro Champs campaigns against SEJ.

The SMJFL will be seeking to take home only its second Championships title, the first having been won by the Under 15 Division 1 team of 2011.

The SMJFL’s Under 14 Division 2 team reached the grand final last year, but was defeated by the Yarra Junior Football League.

Head coach of the SMJFL’s Under 14 program Steve Walton said this year’s Under 14 group is one of the best he has dealt with.

“It’s up there, definitely,” he said.

“It’s a group that’s a touch smaller in height, so collectively we’ve got a lot more runners and I’m hoping to have a lot of quick ball movement.

“We’ve got a couple of key-position players that will easily hold their ground, but they’ll be feeding off the players all around them.”

Under 15s head coach Mick Roberts said the overall talent of this year’s Under 15 group is greater than that of recent squads.

“I would say this squad runs deeper than the squads of the last two years, without a doubt,” Roberts said.

“What we’re concentrating on is trying to get them to play a brand of football they will need to play at a higher level – if they’re to go to a higher level.

“We think that if they can carry out what we’ve been trying to teach them, they’ll be more than competitive.”
