SMJFL Statement – Under 17 Division One Grand Final
The South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL) would like to issue the following statement in regards to the Under 17 Division One Grand Final.
The South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL) can confirm that the Ormond Junior Football Club (OJFC) has forfeited its right to play in the Under 17 Division One SMJFL Grand Final on Sunday 3rd September as a result of fielding ineligible players in a final.
Appendix 5, 2.2 of the SMJFL By-Laws deem a player ineligible if they have played a total of six matches in any higher ranked competitions (including U19s) and therefore unable to play in a lower ranked competition for the remainder of the season (and finals), unless an exemption is lodged and subsequently granted by the league.
On this occasion, OJFC did not approach the league for any exemptions for their players who participated in the Under 19’s. This rule was widely communicated to clubs throughout the season, whereby five other clubs had all applied for exemptions.
While the league acknowledges it was not a deliberate breach, the application of the provisions in the SMJFL By-Laws are clear.
The league will be making no further comment.
SMJFL By-Laws, Appendix 5 – Player Movement & Finals Qualification Policy 2.2
The following player movement restrictions apply:
(i) Once a player has played a total of six matches in any higher ranked competitions (including U19s and/or Senior Women’s) they are unable to play in a lower ranked competition for the remainder of the season (including finals).
