Statement from South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL) Chief Executive Officer Sarah Loh
15 June 2020
The SMJFL 2020 season will commence on Friday 10 July with its traditional season opener following the Premier’s announcement to ease further restrictions in the near-future. The SMJFL has been ready for the season since shutdown in mid-March, and we are beyond excited for the Premier’s announcement to bring back footy.
The season will launch with the league’s Major Corporate Partner, the Monash University Round, and a Friday-night footy special to be held under lights with a feature game. Its going to be a special occasion, and we can’t wait to see the kids running around once again.
The SMJFL is the largest independent junior football organisation in Australia with 11,361 registered players, employing 724 umpires, 25 member clubs, over 4,500 match-day volunteers, and scheduling over 3,500 games annually.
The league recognises its responsibility to return to football safely during these challenging times through COVID-19 pandemic. The safety of our community is and always has been our main priority and, as our motto states, ‘It’s about the kids’. We’re now confident to announce the commencement of the season following the Premier’s announcement and AFL Vic (AFLV)’s endorsement.
The league is awaiting return to play protocols from AFLV and will communicate the protocols to clubs as soon as this information comes to hand.
The July 10 commencement will give the league and clubs sufficient time to make final preparations for the season, seek clarification regarding the return to play protocols from AFLV, to provide education and training to our clubs and players and make the competition as safe as possible.
The SMJFL thanks all Club Presidents, players, coaches, officials and volunteers for helping the league keep the community safe. The league is grateful to have such a supportive community, and it is because of everyone’s efforts and diligence that the 2020 SMJFL season can commence.
Thank you to all of our Corporate Partners for supporting the league and staying with the league during these unprecedented times. We would also like to acknowledge all the hard work done by AFLV working with the State Government to make a return to football possible.
We can’t wait to see our kids get active again and participate in our great game. Let the countdown begin!
