In the final round of the regular season, Division 1 saw an upset and a first win, while Division 2 included a playoff of the top 2.

Here is our weekend wrap:

Division 1:

St Bedes/Mentone caused an upset in the last round, when they defeated third on the ladder Prahran by 68-points. The Tigers kept Prahran scoreless for the first half of the game, establishing a solid 43-point lead by the break. Prahran had a better third quarter, kicking 2.3 to the Tigers’ 1.1, but it wasn’t enough to put themselves back in the game. Prahran were once again unable to score in the final term, with the unstoppable Tigers booting 5 and storming home. St Bedes/Mentone’s Karina Diaz and Tai Pastore had their standout games of the season, kicking 4 and 3 respectively. Final Score: St Bedes/Mentone 12.11 83 def. Prahran 2.3 15

Port Melbourne experienced their first win of the season after their 23-point triumph over Bentleigh. The Colts retained the lead throughout the match, keeping the Demons to a single behind for the first half of the game. The intensity increased in the third quarter when the Demons’ hard fought efforts saw them kick 1.3 to Port Melbourne’s 1 behind, with Bentleigh trailing by just 9-points going into the final term and keeping patrons on edge. However, the Colts didn’t want to let their first potential win slip, and had an outstanding last quarter that saw them shut down the Demons and kick 2 goals to cement the win. Final Score: Bentleigh 1.4 10 def. Port Melbourne 4.9 33

Brighton Beach maintain their top of the ladder run, with a win over the Sharks at Jack Barker Oval. Despite being scoreless by the end of the first quarter and trailing and the half-time break, the Kangaroos had a solid third quarter that saw them take the lead and give themselves a chance to win. Their game only improved in the last quarter, when the Kangaroos completely shut down Beaumaris, scoring a goal of their own and preventing the Sharks from scoring at all. It was a shaky start, but the Kangaroos got over the line by 12-points in the end. Final Score: Beaumaris 2.4 16 def. by Brighton Beach 4.4 28

Division 2:

It was a tight, low scoring game in the playoff of 1 & 2, with the Hampton Rovers scoring just two behinds and St Kilda City left scoreless throughout the first three quarters of the game. Much of the match was played out in the middle and both teams struggled to get the ball into the 50 and create any scoring opportunities. The last quarter held all the action with both teams kicking 2 goals a piece, the tension increasing towards the end of the quarter. It was purely on behinds that the Rovers were able to get over the line and beat their top of the ladder rivals. Final Score: Hampton Rovers 2.5 17 def. St Kilda City 2.4 16

East Brighton had a solid victory at home over Oakleigh on Sunday, the Vampires able to control the game and keep the Dragons down.  Oakleigh struggled to score throughout the match, kept to a single behind for the first half the game and kicking just 1 major throughout the second half. The Vampires showed the diversity in their team with 5 different players scoring at least one goal, with Sophie Strahan leading the charge with 3 to her name. Final Score: East Brighton 7.9 51 def. Oakleigh 1.1 7
