Two former SMJFL stars will try their hand at AFLX in the revamped competition at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.

Andrew McGrath and Jack Higgins will be suiting up for the one-night competition, alongside some of the country’s best players.

McGrath was selected in Patrick Dangerfield’s team Bolts, with Luke Hodge, Steele Sidebottom, Robbie Gray, Luke Parker and Andrew Gaff just some the stars picked by Dangerfield in the AFLX draft.

Higgins was selected by Fremantle skipper Nat Fyfe for his side Flyers, a star-studded line-up containing Marcus Bontempelli, Scott Pendlebury, Jeremy Cameron, Isaac Heeney and Stephen Coniglio, among others.

McGrath is putting together an eye-catching pre-season at Essendon as he looks to work his way into the Bombers’ midfield in 2019.

“I learnt a lot of lessons about how the best players in the League go about it and why they’re the best players,” McGrath told AFL.com.au in January.

“I’ve put in a few steps in my training to hopefully try to become one of those players in the future, but 2018 was definitely a big learning year for me”

“For me it’s about continually trying to do more than players around me and pushing myself,” he said.

Higgins has also been putting in the hard yards as he looks to cement his spot in Richmond’s best 22 in 2019, having played 20 games in his debut season.
