Cheltenham’s Alec McComb makes the World Squad

Alec McComb (Cheltenham JFC) began his journey to the World Squad when he was selected to play for the Victorian All Nation’s Team at the National Championships in Blacktown.

The World Team Program is a National AFL male Multicultural program, where participants are selected by AFL Club recruiters based on school attendance, leadership skills, and football ability. Alec was selected from the All Nation’s side into the World Squad following a premiership winning performance at the National Diversity Championships, where he was also voted as the series’ Most Valuable Player.

The program consists of two residential camps focusing on football development, leadership and cultural education. The primary objective of the program is to ensure players are provided with the tools and education to make the transition into the mainstream talent pathway.

The World Team also engages three multicultural coaches selected from the All Nations Cup to further develop their coaching education. The coaches are mentored by former AFL coaches.

AFL General Manager Game Development, Andrew Dillon, said the World Team program is a great opportunity for the best rising Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural talent in the nation to develop on and off the field.

“These are more than just programs, we are now preparing the next generation of young leaders and footballers with the skills, qualities, and experiences to become positive role models amongst their own families and within their broader communities.

“Over the past few years we have seen the Diversity Championships grow into a genuine elite talent pathway and we look forward to witnessing the next stage of development for these players, coaches, and umpires,” Mr Dillon said.

One of 25 members in this years squad, Alec is currently up at the Gold Coast, playing in two exhibition matches at the 2018 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, with a second carnival scheduled for November.

Congratulations on your incredible achievements, Alec!
